The Dodecanese Islands is the name given to the team of islands that embrace the Turkish coastline from Rhodes in the southern to Patmos in the northern. Dodecanese means ‘twelve’ and there are twelve major islands that give the group the title but in fact the Dodecanese consists of 163 islands in total, of which twenty six are inhabited.
Many of the Dodecanese islands have experienced violent backgrounds at the hands of various invaders, particularly the Turks, and there is a strong Ottoman impact almost everywhere. The premier holiday island in this chain is Rhodes, the capital of the archipelago and by far the greatest island in the team with great air and sea links. Rhodes and Kos both have global international airports and both ferries and hydrofoils ply a normal route through the Dodecanese. Aside from Rhodes the primary bundle vacation island is Kos, with Kalymnos, Patmos and Leros well-liked with impartial travellers. Most of the other island destinations, for instance Halki, Symi, Lipsi, Pserimos, Tilos and Nisyros, are well-liked day trip destinations.
