Mevlana ( Mevlâna Celâleddin-i Rûmi ) Commemoration Ceremonies

An astounding event held annually in December in Konya, Turkey, the Mevlana festival commemorates Jelaleddin Rumi (Mevlana), the great 13th-century Sufi poet, saint and founder of the Mevlevi (Whirling) Dervish order, who is buried in Konya. The two-week festival, particularly the final ceremony honouring the anniversary of Rumi’s death, is one of the world’s greatest spectacles and is held at Konya’s new Mevlana Cultural Centre.

Hz. Mevlana, who summed up life in the above words, passed away on 17 December 1273 following a brief time on his sickbed and reached out to his Allah and his beloved prophet. Mevlevi disciples call this night Seb-i Arus (wedding night), the night of unity.
